Volunteering and Leadership

Tech+ UW Organizing Team

During the summer of quarantine, I found myself at a loss of direction. This is when I became a mentee under the Tech+ Mentorship Program, from which I learned so much. To give back, I am honoured to be part of the organizing team. I am currently a tools developer and am helping build a new website and members portal from scratch with my team!

UW Double Degree Club Vice President

As the VP of Waterloo Affairs for the Double Degree Club, I worked with my team to revamp the social media platforms, coordinate networking and panel events in the remote environment, and host online giveaways to promote for club awareness. It was eye-opening to work with a team of driven, organized peers, from whom I learned a lot about project management, marketing techniques and remote communication.

UW Stats Club Marketing Executive

Dedicated to bringing together students interested in stats, the Stats Club provides opportunities and resources the undergraduate community. As the Marketing Analyst, I actively promoted the club events, increased membership, and helped run the campus-wide events.

Vancouver Science World Teen Advisory Group

The TAG team at Science world Organizes bi-monthly SWEET events at TELUS World of Science specifically for youths across the Lower Mainland. We met several times a month to develop engaging themes, plan the logistics, promote the events, reach out to guest presenters, and direct customrs. It was rewarding to engage high-schoolers in science through a form of entertainment.

Math Contest Club President

Math Contest Club is the body that organizes CEMC / AMC contests for students at Port Moody Secondary. I have been avidly taking the contests every year myself and improved my problem-solving skills through the process. We also hold meetings to discuss and seek help for challenging questions.

Noons Creek Hatchery Volunteer

With love and care for the environment, the Noons Creek Salmon Hatchery raises coho and chum salmons from eggs to fingerlings before releasing them. I was a lab specialist who tests water samples weekly to ensure that the local stream waters are suitable for the salmons' growth. Every year, I participated in the annual egg-takes to source the eggs from returning salmons. I also helped out in the Fingerling Festivals that invite the public to release the baby salmons and raise awareness for environmental protection.

Port Moody Badminton Co-Captain & Tournament Organizer

Since 2015, I have been heavily involved in the badminton teams at Port Moody Secondary. I helped run the annual invitational tournament in 2017 and 2018 that hosted 8 schools, and was the tournament organizer for the 2019 tournament. I also had the honor to be the coach for the junior team and the co-captain for the senior team in 2019. With my co-captain and sponsor teachers, we held practices, decided team strategies, and unified team spirit. Our team was proud to eventually take third place in the 2019 Provincial Championship!

Athletic Leadership

The Port Moody Secondary Athletic Leadership team facilitated daily lunch time open gym sessions, coordinated athletic events, and held intramurals. I organized the badminton and volleyball intramurals through creating the draws, encouraging participation, keeping score, and communicating with participants.

Employment

TD Technology

Solutions Developer

June - August 2020

Over the course of the summer, I worked as a solutions developer in TD's Corporate Segment Technology Solutions department. I have been exposed to a variety of tools and environments, including Visual Studio, Linux and z/OS Mainframe. Specifically, I revamped an obfuscation program in C# and a data validation program in VBA that protect critical client data. These allow TD to abide by the new law put into place by the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation Act. I also worked with SQL and vi to build data integration tools (SSIS) and patch legacy tools. Although the the internship has been remote due to COVID, I was able to learn a lot about communication in a project, building connections in a team, and learning from those around me.

Xing Fu Tang Canada

Bubble Tea Barista

May - August 2019

I worked at Xing Fu Tang Coquitlam as a barista to bring authentic brown sugar boba to bubble tea enthusiasts with love. Our store followed the exact formula from Taiwan, and this trained me to stay focused and always pay close attention to the details.

Private Tutor

Private Math Tutor

May - October 2018

I tutored my client for pre-calculus 12. It challenged me to communicate effectively and demonstrate patience. I also learned to apply critical thinking by giving analogies and connecting different concepts. We were able to see an improvement in my client's grade.

McDonald's

Crew Member

September 2016 - February 2017

Working at McDonald's was my first job. Althought they were long hours, lots of standing, and extremely early / late shifts, this experience taught me to work hard and not take any profession for granted. I learned to deal with rude customers, work face-to-face, and take responsiblity in a team.
